Additional technical demands on the Type 201´s twelve planned boats led to the designation as Type 205 from the fourth unit on. This type had a longer range and a slighty increased length and  displacement compared to Type 201. At the request of Germany exceeding the 350 t limit by this was sanctioned subsequently by the WEU by rising the tonnage limit from 350 t to 450t on 19 Oktober 1962.

The first unit of this Type was U 4 and up until 1969 a total of 9 boats were commissioned. The former boats of Type 201 U 1 and U 2 were re-commissioned in the years 1966/67 after a reconstruction to Type 205A, so that the Type 205 together with the modified Type 205A consisted of a total of 11 U-boats. U 1 served as a trial boat for air independent propulsion from 1988 on after being reconstructed once again. After commissioning of the U-boats Type 206 from 1973 on the 5 U-boats of Type 205 were de-commissioned (U 4, U 5, U 6, U 7, U 8).
