Type 202
In early plans for the German Navy the construction of 12 small U-boats with a displacement of approximately 100 t, an armament of two torpedoes and a complement of 8-10 was intended, but these plans were rejected. Nevertheless the design for this type was completed for at first 3 units. Designated Type 202, the construction of two trial boats began in 1965 with their commissionings on 14 October 1965 as Hans Techel and on 6 April 1966 as Friedrich Schürer, the third boat was not to be built.
These small boats proved to be largely inappropiate for the German Navy since they had a complement of only 6, 2 bow torpedo tubes and a limited range of 400 nmi at 10 kn using their 350 HP propulsion, and were consequently de-commissioned only a few months after their commissioning (Hans Techel on 15/12/1966 und Friedrich Schürer on 15/12/1966). With this all further development for this type was terminated.
