Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel visits

On 31 August 2006 the Federal Chancelor of Germany, elected in the Autumn of 2005, payed her first official visit to the German Navy at Warnemünde at the Baltic Sea. She was presented German Naval units in port and sailed with the frigate Sachsen to see the Navy in action. In port, she was given an extensive tour though the Type 212A U-boat U 33, at that time the latest addition to the Naval inventory. Many pictures of this visit made to the media, most published picture, however, was Chancelor Merkel , accompanied by the then Chief of the German Navy, Vice Admiral Wolfgang Nolting, on board the frigate during an overflight by a “Tornado” jet a/c.
